This isn't much of a beach place though. The best place to laze around in the sun is at the Split, the narrow channel that was formed out of the middle of the caye when Hurricane Hattie struck in 1961. The water is a little more protected there. Swimming is not recommended elsewhere on the island, because of rather heavy motorboat traffic. It was a LOT more beautiful before the hurricane in 01. You have to take a boat out to the reef to snorkel, but it is worth the boat ride. The coral formations are unique and water clarity is quite clear.
