Moldova was badly damaged during World War II. Two thirds of the larger cities were destroyed. During Stalinist times most of it was rebuild, but of course in Stalinist style.

Moldova is one of the poorest countries of Europe - the GDP per capita is not higher than that of some African countries. Bordering on Romania and the Ukraine it is close to the Black Sea but is still landlocked.
