Montenegro is located in southeastern Europe, bordering the Adriatic Sea and Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north, Serbia to the east and Albania to the south. In recent decades, Montenegro was a constituent republic of various incarnations of Yugoslavia and the state union of Serbia and Montenegro. Based on the results of a referendum held on May 21, 2006, Montenegro declared independence on June 3, 2006.
