Today the bay is lined with numerous beaches, several tourist resorts and a few historical sites. The most important attractions in the area are Kotor, Risan with its fortress, the Island of Flowers near Tivat and the monasteries of Petrovac.

If you can stand to drive (warning: it isn't for the nervous) then try going down to Sveti Stefan and the magical area which contains two famous hotels owned by Milocer. Sveti Stefan is contained on an island outcrop and is a former fishing village which in the 60's was a hedonistic destination for the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Please don't try staying there (way too expensive) but risk the 7 euro entry and enjoy some home made lemonade on the hotel island in a beautiful little cafe bar and dream for a while!

What ever you do DON'T travel inland to the capital or around the interior. The roads are just not up to it and you can only average 40km/h which means a short journey takes many hours. There isn't all that much to see to be honest and if you have purchased the only English guide to Monte Negro by Brandt ask yourself if the author has ever visited the place because I don't think they ever have!

This is one of Europe's final backwaters. Beautiful, rugged but somewhere you'll either love or be keen to escape back to creature comforts.

Others may disagree with this viewpoint. Take the mountain road from Kotor to Cetinje for views that you will never forget. Drive on to the Durmitor National Park and the scenery both there and en route is truly stunning! The people you can meet are unbelievably helpful.
